Blacksword Barracuda: Naval Group to unveil new submarine at Euronaval 2024

By Defence Industry Europe

The upcoming Euronaval 2024, taking place from 4 to 7 November at Paris Nord Villepinte, promises significant innovation in the world of naval defence. Among the highlights is the unveiling of the Blacksword Barracuda, an advanced 3,000-tonne class attack submarine by French shipbuilding company Naval Group.

Described as a “marvel of its generation,” the Blacksword Barracuda boasts exceptional acoustic superiority, making it one of the most silent submarines in operation. Stephan Meunier, Marketing Director at Naval Group, expressed confidence in its stealth capabilities, stating that the vessel is designed with cutting-edge hydrodynamic shapes, innovative materials, and suspended cradles for equipment, enhancing both its discretion and detection capabilities.

The submarine’s firepower is notable, capable of carrying nearly thirty heavy weapons, including missiles, torpedoes, and offensive mines. Another revolutionary feature is its use of the latest generation of lithium-ion batteries, allowing the vessel to sustain underwater operations for days at high speeds. Additionally, the Blacksword Barracuda is equipped with a state-of-the-art combat system based on learnings from the Suffren class, further optimising its operational performance.

Naval Group also highlights the improved living conditions for the crew, ensuring a more comfortable experience during long missions. This is a significant advancement compared to existing conventional submarines, enhancing mission endurance and operational effectiveness.

The Blacksword Barracuda is designed with adaptability at its core, suitable for various geostrategic challenges and capable of global deployment in diverse operational environments. According to Meunier, the submarine’s adaptability extends to integrating advanced arms and equipment, including drones, and providing comprehensive training solutions from theory to practical simulation.
