Boeing secures a contract for additional P-8A Poseidon aircraft for U.S. Navy

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Department of Defense has announced a new contract with Boeing to continue production and modification of P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft for the U.S. Navy. The agreement, signed on 21 November, is valued at USD 1.7 billion, with an initial funding tranche of USD 700 million released upon signing.

A key element of the contract is the procurement of seven additional P-8A Poseidon aircraft for the U.S. Navy. The agreement also includes work on export orders under the 13th production series for Canada and Germany.

This order aligns with previous announcements about the Navy’s intent to expand its fleet of P-8A Poseidons. Notably, the U.S. Congress has approved funding for ten aircraft in the current budget, suggesting that an additional three units may be procured in the future.

To date, Boeing has delivered 200 P-8 Poseidon aircraft, which are currently in service with countries including the United States, Australia, India, the United Kingdom, Norway, New Zealand, and South Korea. Earlier this year, Boeing secured a production agreement for 17 additional P-8 aircraft, including 14 for Canada and three for Germany.

The global P-8 fleet has accumulated over 600,000 flight hours, demonstrating its critical role in maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. Other nations, such as the Netherlands, Denmark, and Italy, have also expressed interest in acquiring the aircraft, signalling potential future orders.
