The four-year upgrade programme will equip the aircraft with enhanced antennas, sensors and software to boost computer processing and communication systems. “Increment 3 Block 2 will deliver next‑generation detection and targeting for aircrews, while the newest aircraft strengthens fleet readiness and operational reach, all while maintaining interoperability with the U.S. Navy P-8A fleet,” said Naomi Smith, director of Boeing Defence Australia Sustainment Operations.
The latest aircraft was delivered on 29 September, with a 14th and final P-8A scheduled to arrive in 2026. The upgrades aim to help RAAF crews search for, detect and target some of the world’s most advanced submarines, enhancing Australia’s ability to defend its extensive maritime territory.
Initial upgrades for two RAAF P-8As will be performed at Boeing’s maintenance facility in Jacksonville, Florida, marking the first time international aircraft are modified at the site. The remaining fleet will undergo upgrades at Boeing Defence Australia’s Deeper Maintenance & Modification Facility near RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia.
