Bohemia Interactive Simulations (BISim), a subsidiary of BAE Systems, Inc., has been selected to provide its Virtual Battlespace (VBS) software for the Royal Australian Navy’s Hunter Class frigate programme. The software will serve as the central synthetic environment at the Land-Based Test Site (LBTS), used to verify system integration, interoperability, and performance before the systems are installed on the vessels.

The VBS platform delivers a unified, real-time simulation environment that allows separate combat and navigation systems to interact as they would onboard a fully operational ship. It enables data-level interactions such as ship manoeuvring, sensor inputs, target tracking, and command operations, creating a realistic and flexible testbed.

“Every modern ship class requires a way to validate system integration and performance before deployment,” said Ryan Stephenson, managing director of BISim’s Australian branch. “The synthetic test environment powered by VBS provides that capability safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively.”

As the first Hunter Class frigate is scheduled for delivery in 2030, the simulation system is expected to play a key role in ensuring operational readiness. “As the first Hunter Class frigate approaches delivery in 2030, BISim’s synthetic environment will help ensure the Royal Australian Navy’s most advanced surface combatants are equipped with fully integrated, battle-ready systems from the outset,” Stephenson added.

In addition to integration testing, the VBS platform supports training, mission planning, and operational rehearsal. The validated environment can be further adapted for part-task training across systems such as remote weapon stations, uncrewed aerial vehicles, the Phalanx CIWS, and small boat handling, avoiding the risks and expenses of live equipment use.
