CENTCOM and partner forces conduct successful operations against ISIS in Iraq and Syria

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM), in collaboration with partner forces, has carried out a series of operations in Iraq and Syria between 30 December 2024 and 6 January 2025 as part of the ongoing Defeat ISIS (D-ISIS) campaign. These operations aimed to disrupt and weaken ISIS’ ability to plan and execute attacks on civilians and allied interests in the region.

In Iraq, multiple strikes targeted ISIS strongholds in the Hamrin Mountains. These strikes, conducted in cooperation with Iraqi forces, included Coalition air support using F-16s, F-15s, and A-10 aircraft. Notably, A-10s were deployed to eliminate ISIS fighters hiding in a cave, achieving significant success. While the operations faced resistance from ISIS fighters, no U.S. personnel were injured, though one Coalition member lost their life and two others sustained injuries.

In Syria, a separate operation took place from 2 to 3 January near Dayr az-Zawr, led by Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) with CENTCOM’s support. This mission resulted in the capture of an ISIS attack cell leader, marking a key achievement in the effort to degrade the group’s operational capabilities.

General Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM Commander, emphasised the importance of such partnered operations in maintaining pressure on ISIS. He highlighted the global nature of the campaign and the vital role of allies and partners in preventing the resurgence of the terrorist group. “The enduring defeat of ISIS is a global effort that relies on our Coalition, allies, and partners,” he stated.
