The United States military has deployed AH-64 Apache attack helicopters in operations linked to the conflict with Iran under Operation Epic Fury, according to updates released by U.S. Central Command on March 16 and March 18. The inclusion of Apaches in official aircraft listings marks the first confirmed use of the platform in the campaign.

Further details were provided on March 19 by John D. Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, during a briefing on operations in the Middle East. He said the helicopters are operating on Iran’s southern flank, although specific mission details were not disclosed.

U.S. AH-64 helicopters continue to operate in Iraq, where they are engaged in countering Iran-aligned militia groups. The aircraft have also been used by allied nations in the region to intercept Iranian aerial threats, including unmanned systems.

Footage released by defence authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Israel has shown Apache helicopters intercepting Iranian Shahed drones. Qatar and the UAE used AH-64E Version 6 helicopters, while Israel deployed AH-64D variants in these operations.

U.S. Army Apaches may also be involved in countering unmanned aerial systems, particularly given the limited availability of ground-based air defence systems. The helicopters have previously conducted exercises in the region focused on engaging drone threats.

The unit currently deployed is the 6-17th Air Cavalry Squadron, part of the 4th Infantry Division Combat Aviation Brigade. The brigade confirmed its participation following CENTCOM’s announcement, with the unit operating AH-64D V14 helicopters since its deployment in the second half of 2025 under Operation Inherent Resolve.

The ongoing transformation of U.S. Army aviation is likely a factor limiting the scale of Apache deployment in the conflict. Additional constraints include the unit’s commitments across the Middle East and the capabilities of the AH-64D platform in large-scale, multi-domain operations.

No additional U.S. Army aviation units have been deployed to the region beyond the existing brigade rotation. The current unit is expected to be replaced by another brigade in the coming months as part of standard operational rotations.
