This initiative is part of a broader strategy by the Norwegian government to increase production capacity within the nation’s defence industry, responding to the growing demand for high explosives in Europe.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Norwegian government has been actively supporting its defence sector, aiming to bolster the production of critical military supplies.
As part of these efforts, the government has already co-funded GBP 32 million, in collaboration with the EU, to expand Chemring Nobel’s current production capacity.
This funding has allowed the company to more than double its output, strengthening its position as a key player in the European defence industry.
The latest announcement follows the government’s introduction of a new roadmap on 10 October 2024, aimed at enhancing production capabilities in the Norwegian defence sector.
The roadmap highlights a significant shortfall in the production of high explosives like HMX, RDX, and NTO within Europe.
Given Chemring Nobel’s role as one of only two manufacturers of advanced military explosives in the region, increasing its production capacity is considered crucial to meeting the needs of NATO and European allies.
The feasibility study, co-financed by the Norwegian government, will examine various factors related to establishing a new production facility.
This includes assessing potential geographic locations, infrastructure needs, and environmental impacts.
The study will also determine the extent of any further financial contributions that the Norwegian government might make towards the development of the facility.
Expected to be completed by the end of 2024, the study represents a significant step in addressing the growing demand for military explosives.
By collaborating with Chemring Nobel, the Norwegian government aims to ensure a reliable supply of these critical materials, both for national defence and for the collective security of its NATO and European partners.
