The Croatian government has approved the procurement of the Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 drone system as part of a major defence modernisation initiative. The package, valued at $95 million, includes the delivery of unmanned aircraft, training in Türkiye, and a range of supporting equipment and services.

The decision was announced following a government meeting on Thursday, during which approvals were also given for the maintenance of Rafale fighter jets and preparatory actions for the procurement of Leopard tanks. The Ministry of Defence emphasised the strategic importance of the Bayraktar TB2 drones for Croatia’s national defence capabilities.

Defence Minister Ivan Anusic highlighted the urgency of the purchase. “The Armed Forces of the Republic of Croatia expressed the need for priority and urgent procurement of the armed Bayraktar TB2 system,” he stated. Anusic detailed the scope of the acquisition, which includes six drones equipped with electro-optical cameras for reconnaissance and an initial set of weapons. “The configuration ensures double radio coverage of the entire territory of Croatia in stationary and mobile versions,” he added.

The package encompasses a command and control centre, a training simulator, and ground monitoring and control stations. Additional provisions include spare parts sufficient for 4,000 flight hours, maintenance tools, a two-year warranty, and expert support within Croatia for two years. Training for personnel will be conducted in Türkiye, and the entire system will be transported to Croatia upon completion.

This procurement marks a significant step in modernising Croatia’s defence capabilities, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening national security. The Bayraktar TB2 drones, which have gained international recognition for their effectiveness, are expected to enhance reconnaissance and operational flexibility for the Croatian Armed Forces.
