This marks the second German compensation to the Czech Republic for its provision of military equipment to Ukraine, which is currently contending with Russian aggression. The first Leopard 2A4 from this agreement will be delivered by the end of this year, with the remaining tanks scheduled to arrive by early 2026. Additionally, preliminary market consultations have begun regarding the potential purchase of more Leopard 2A4 tanks, accelerating the modernisation of the Czech armoured forces.
In 2022-2023, the Czech Republic received a gift from Germany comprising 14 used Leopard 2A4 tanks and one Büffel 3 recovery vehicle on the Leopard 2 chassis. These vehicles are now part of the 73rd Tank Battalion. Soon, the Czech army will possess a total of 28 Leopard 2A4 tanks and two recovery vehicles. Moreover, initial discussions have commenced regarding the acquisition of another 14 used Leopard 2A4 tanks.
Concurrently, negotiations are underway between the Czech and German sides for the purchase of several dozen brand-new Leopard 2 tanks in the latest A8 version. If these negotiations succeed, the Czech Republic will be able to purchase 61 of these tanks in various modifications under a framework agreement, with the possibility of acquiring an additional 16 tanks in the future.
