The launch event was held in the presence of representatives from Portugal, Romania and the Netherlands. Officials included Vice Admiral Pires, Rear Admiral Neculae and ambassadors from both Portugal and the Netherlands.
The MPV 10720 is based on a concept developed by the Portuguese Navy. It is designed as a flexible platform capable of carrying out a wide range of missions.
The vessel features a high level of system autonomy and is suitable for operations in tropical and moderate environments. It is intended to support activities including oceanographic research, environmental monitoring, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief and maritime surveillance.
According to Damen, the vessel is also capable of deploying unmanned systems and helicopters. This enhances its operational flexibility across multiple mission profiles.
Damen signed the contract for the vessel in 2024 following a competitive tender process. The project is supported by funding from the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under the NextGenerationEU programme.
The shipbuilder worked closely with the Portuguese Navy and industrial partners to refine the design. This collaboration contributed to the development of Damen’s Multi-Purpose Support Ship range, which integrates military-grade technology with standardised solutions.
The launch marks the beginning of the vessel’s pre-delivery phase. Sea trials are scheduled to take place later this year before the ship enters service.
Bram Langeveld, Chief Commercial Officer at Damen, highlighted the vessel’s operational role. “Given Portugal’s vast coastline, this ship is a valuable addition to both the Portuguese navy and European maritime operations. It will support maritime security, scientific research, and disaster relief efforts.”
He also emphasised the collaborative nature of the project. “The MPV 10720 is the result of the Portuguese Navy’s forward-thinking and innovative approach to meeting modern naval requirements.”
“Damen has greatly valued the navy’s clear vision and constructive partnership, which has enabled efficient construction within a short timeframe,” he added. The company said the project reflects a broader effort to deliver adaptable and cost-effective naval platforms.
The vessel is named after a Portuguese king associated with the Age of Discovery. Once operational, it will join other Damen-built ships already serving in the Portuguese naval fleet.
