Danish Army receives new Leguan 2 armoured vehicle-launched bridges

By Defence Industry Europe

The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has officially delivered new Leguan 2 Armoured Vehicle-Launched Bridges (AVLBs) to the Engineer Regiment. The bridge-laying systems, based on the Leopard 2 platform, include bridge spans of 14 and 26 metres, enhancing the Danish Army’s capability to traverse obstacles.

A total of seven Leguan 2 AVLBs have been procured from German manufacturer KNDS Deutschland. The choice of the Leopard 2 chassis aligns with Denmark’s existing main battle tank fleet, streamlining logistics, maintenance, and crew training.

Colonel Thomas Øgendahl Knudsen, head of DALO’s land military division, highlighted the advantages of adopting the Leguan system. He stated that Denmark would now be part of an international user community, collaborating with other nations on maintenance, training, and operational developments to sustain the system for years to come.

Each of the seven AVLBs is delivered with a transport trailer for bridge movement, as well as training equipment, spare parts, and specialised tools. The acquisition also includes “Table Top Trainers,” computer-based simulators designed to support crew training and operational readiness.

The Leguan 2 AVLBs replace the ageing Biber system, which was based on the older Leopard 1 platform. This modernisation significantly enhances the Danish Army’s ability to support armoured units in crossing water obstacles and complex terrain.

Lieutenant Colonel René Sølvberg, commander of the 1st Armoured Engineer Battalion, described the arrival of the new AVLBs as a key milestone. He noted that the new systems would allow the brigade to conduct more efficient river crossings and, with additional preparation, deploy multi-span bridges of up to 48 metres.
