Germany is leading the development programme, with Sweden, Spain, and Italy also participating as partner nations. The BAAINBw signed the contract on behalf of this multinational consortium, which marks an important step in the modernisation of the IRIS-T missile system.
The IRIS-T (InfraRed Imaging System – Tail/Thrust Vector Controlled) is a European-developed short-range air-to-air missile. The original version was created under the leadership of Diehl Defence in cooperation with industrial partners from Sweden, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Norway. The project highlights European collaboration in defence technology and demonstrates the capabilities of the European defence industry.
Diehl Defence, as the main contractor, plays a key role in the continued development and production of the missile. Since its introduction in 2005, more than 5,000 IRIS-T missiles have been delivered, and the system is currently in service with the air forces of 13 nations. The missile is integrated into various aircraft platforms, including the Eurofighter Typhoon, Gripen, F-16, Tornado, EF-18, KF-21, and F-5E. It is designed to engage not only enemy aircraft but also incoming air-to-air and surface-to-air missiles.
The IRIS-T system continues to be enhanced, with improvements ensuring that it remains a capable and adaptable air-to-air weapon.
