EDA tests autonomous systems in preparation for 2025 Operational Experimentation (OPEX) campaign

By Defence Industry Europe

The European Defence Agency (EDA) has conducted a series of system acceptance tests to assess the readiness of unmanned aerial and ground systems ahead of its Operational Experimentation (OPEX) campaign in Rome, scheduled for June and July 2025. These tests are a critical step to ensure that each system meets defined technical, reliability, operational, and safety standards before deployment.

Hosted by the Italian Army, the OPEX campaign offers a platform to deploy autonomous systems in realistic operational environments. It focuses on testing advanced unmanned technologies under field-like conditions to accelerate their integration into future EU defence capabilities.

Over the past weeks, EDA experts travelled across the European Union to evaluate the proposed solutions of six companies participating in the project. These companies are Beyond Vision from Portugal, ALTUS LSA from Greece, Schiebel from Austria, Alisys from Spain, Siec Badawcza Lukasiewicz PIAP from Poland, and ARX Robotics from Germany.

“These tests represented a milestone in the campaign, ensuring that the selected systems are prepared to support the development and validation of future autonomous solutions for European defence logistics,” the EDA stated. The evaluations confirmed the systems’ compliance and their readiness to move forward to the operational experimentation phase.

Beyond its technical aims, the OPEX campaign is intended to serve as a strategic enabler for the rapid adoption of emerging technologies across the EU defence landscape. EDA’s Hub for European Defence Innovation (HEDI) is leading this effort by bringing together industry innovators, operational end-users, and experts in an immersive, scenario-based environment.

“HEDI puts innovation to the test, introducing a new EU-wide tool that accelerates the delivery of capabilities quickly, playing a role in making innovation frameworks operational and sharpening the technological edge of European defence,” the EDA explained. By connecting different actors and creating a collaborative setting, HEDI supports the swift adoption of cutting-edge solutions in support of European security and defence objectives.
