EDGE has completed major development milestones for its MIRSAD-X electro-optic system during a field test at XRANGE, the group’s multi-domain training, testing, and evaluation facility. The trial verified the system’s detection, recognition, and identification ranges across targets, as well as its command-and-control, tracking, localisation, and human-machine interface functions.

The field test also confirmed the MIRSAD-X’s operational reliability under the UAE’s hot and humid summer climate. “The MIRSAD-X performed well and consistently provided a clear, stabilised image under harsh weather conditions in the field, which included high temperatures, wind gusts, dust, and air turbulence,” said Felix Matis, Director of the Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence within EDGE’s Technology & Innovation Cluster.

He added, “One of our main objectives was to test and prove the manual and automatic tracking capability of the MIRSAD-X in multiple scenarios. The system demonstrated high performance overall in that regard and we will now look to continue and improve the performance of the system and maximise its capabilities for various use cases.”

According to Slim Sayadi, Senior Technical Manager at the Electro-Optics Centre of Excellence, “Going forward, the next steps for the MIRSAD-X are to test the performance of its laser designator as an additional capability and conduct an ‘on-the-move’ test once integrated onto a land platform.” His remarks highlighted the system’s evolving role in providing enhanced capabilities for operational environments.

The MIRSAD-X is a gyro-stabilised multi-spectral electro-optics imager developed by EDGE’s Technology & Innovation Cluster. Designed for real-time detection, tracking, localisation, and targeting, it supports laser-guided munitions as well as maritime and border surveillance, with planned integration across ground and naval platforms, including a dedicated naval variant.
