By Defence Industry Europe

ELAC Sonar, a German subsidiary of the UK-based Cohort, has been awarded a contract by Italy's Leonardo. The 60-month contract, valued at EUR 16 million, is for supplying an additional sonar system for Italy’s innovative U212 NFS (Near Future Submarine) programme, as announced on December 22, 2023.

The U212 NFS program, managed by the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), is a cutting-edge project by the Italian Navy. It encompasses the development, production, and in-service support of four new submarines (three plus one optional) for the Italian fleet. The programme successfully passed its critical design review in February 2023.

ELAC Sonar expressed great honor and pleasure in announcing the continuation of the NFS programme with the confirmation of the option for submerine number 3. The company will be providing its Sphere-based Kaleidoscope 2.0 integrated sonar suite, designed to handle large volumes of sonar data from various user functions and electro-acoustic sensors.

The Sphere sonar suite offers a wide range of functionalities, including communication, surveying, mine and obstacle avoidance, passive detection, and anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capabilities. ELAC Sonar highlights that their digitally advanced technology for passive sonar systems significantly enhances detection performance and enables multifunctional operator stations to carry out diverse sonar applications on board the submarines.

Bernd Szukay, Managing Director, and Ole Schneider, Financial Director of ELAC Sonar, were quoted as saying, “This contract is another significant win for ELAC Sonar and takes us forward [to] the next step on our growth and technological development path.” This contract signifies a major milestone for ELAC Sonar, reinforcing its position as a key player in the global defense technology sector.
