Elbit Systems targets international market with new missile warning system

By Defence Industry Europe

Elbit Systems has announced the launch of its new PAWS-2 High Resolution (HR) Missile Warning System, which will be unveiled at the 2025 Paris Air Show. The cutting-edge infrared system is designed to enhance the survivability and operational effectiveness of modern fighter aircraft.

The PAWS-2 (HR) is a field-proven passive infrared airborne warning system capable of detecting a broad range of threats, including surface-to-air missiles, air-to-air missiles, and man-portable air-defence systems (MANPADS). It offers protection for fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters operating in high-threat and complex environments.

At the heart of the system is a new-generation cooled Mid-Wave IR (MWIR) Common-MWS sensor featuring over five megapixels of resolution. This enables long-range threat detection, precise geolocation of missile launch points, and early warning for timely deployment of countermeasures.

The system incorporates advanced image processing that ensures exceptionally low false alarm rates, even in cluttered operational settings. Elbit highlights key capabilities such as extended detection range, high angular accuracy for improved threat separation, and the ability to distinguish between direct threats and non-targeted missile launches.

Additionally, PAWS-2 (HR) operates at a very high sampling rate, allowing for Hostile Fire Indication—detecting bursts of small arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs)—particularly relevant for helicopters. Elbit Systems states this performance represents a significant advancement in airborne self-protection technology.

“With the PAWS-2 (HR), Elbit Systems continues to push the boundaries of airborne survivability, delivering cutting-edge solutions that meet the evolving needs of modern air forces,” the company said in a statement. The new sensor will be showcased at Elbit’s booth in Hall 3, Stand B16, within a dedicated electronic warfare room at the Paris Air Show.

Alongside PAWS-2 (HR), Elbit Systems will present a wide range of aerospace capabilities during the show. These include autonomous systems, self-protection suites, airborne munitions, intelligence gathering systems, aerial networking, and mission communication solutions.
