Electro Optic Systems (EOS) unveils R500 Remote Weapon System at IDEX 2025

By Defence Industry Europe

Australian defence technology company Electro Optic Systems (EOS) has officially launched its next-generation Remote Weapon System (RWS), the R500, at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (IDEX) 2025 in Abu Dhabi. Designed to enhance precision and adaptability, the R500 incorporates advanced targeting and counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) capabilities, reinforcing its role in modern combat environments.

Building on the foundation of the R400, the new R500 system introduces increased firepower, greater survivability, and improved situational awareness. Specifically engineered for armoured vehicles and tactical platforms, it boasts the highest stowed ammunition capacity and supports a wide range of modern weapons, including missiles and rockets. This adaptability ensures that military forces can maximise their operational effectiveness in high-threat scenarios.

Dr Andreas Schwer, CEO of EOS, highlighted the importance of innovation in defence technology, stating, “The modern battlefield is evolving rapidly, and armed forces need systems that keep pace with emerging threats. The R500 has been developed with direct operational insights to provide reliability, precision, and adaptability in the most challenging environments.” The system’s launch at IDEX 2025 underscores EOS’ commitment to equipping global defence forces with cutting-edge technology.

A key feature of the R500 is its advanced targeting and threat detection capabilities. The system integrates high-resolution sensors, AI-driven targeting algorithms, and elevated targeting functions to enhance situational awareness. Additionally, the inclusion of C-UAS radar ensures superior threat detection, while STANAG Level 2 add-on armour provides additional protection in high-risk combat zones. The system’s digital architecture, combined with high-performance edge AI hardware, optimises fire control and command efficiency.

Another notable innovation is the R500’s compatibility with unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs). The system includes a new wireless control suite, enabling seamless integration with UGVs and allowing for remote and autonomous operations. This feature enhances operational flexibility and reduces the risks to personnel in combat environments.

EOS’ Remote Weapon Systems have been widely adopted by military forces across Australia, the Middle East, North America, Europe, and South-East Asia. Renowned for their accuracy and reliability, over 2,500 systems have been sold globally, with more than 500 units currently in use by the Emirati Armed Forces. Since 2019, EOS’ technology centre in Abu Dhabi has played a crucial role as a regional hub, supporting customers in the Middle East and beyond.
