Eurofighter and NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency have signed a contract to progress the development, testing and certification of the Aerodynamic Modification Kit for the Eurofighter Typhoon. The upgrade is intended to enable faster integration of new weapons and certification of additional external loads, including future anti-radar missiles designed to suppress and destroy enemy air defence systems.

The AMK will also support the integration of advanced air-to-ground weapons and air-to-air missiles for core customers, with future work including the latest versions of standoff missiles. It is designed to improve air combat performance through enhanced target acquisition and close-quarters combat capability, achieved by modifications to the fuselage strakes, flaperons and leading-edge root, increasing maximum wing lift.

“Signing the AMK contract marks a major milestone for the Eurofighter programme, further enhancing the jet’s long-term capability,” said Jorge Tamarit-Degenhardt, Chief Executive Officer of Eurofighter. “The AMK will provide a huge boost to our Air Forces during their missions, significantly enhancing the integration of air-to-surface configurations and offering greater flexibility in stores carriage, while supporting flight performance,” he said, adding that “the Eurofighter Typhoon will continue to be the backbone of European air defence into the 2060s”.

“The signature of the AMK contract is a significant achievement for the Eurofighter Programme, enabling faster weapon integration, heavier load certification and a host of other improvements,” said Simon Ellard, General Manager of NETMA. He said the contract would “continue the evolution of the Eurofighter Typhoon, and reflects the Programme’s commitment to innovation and delivering the capabilities needed by our Air Forces.”

Development and production of the AMK will be carried out by Eurofighter partner companies Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo. The work is expected to strengthen European aerospace expertise through continued cooperation on advanced combat aircraft systems.
