The project builds on the first iMUGS programme and aims to strengthen Europe’s autonomy in robotics by developing a scalable and secure system-of-systems architecture for unmanned and manned platforms. It also supports Europe’s technological sovereignty in areas such as AI-based autonomy, systems integration, communications, and command and control.
“With iMUGS2, Europe takes another significant step towards developing truly interoperable and scalable robotic forces that enhance the continent’s defence capabilities,” said Raul Rikk, Capability Development Director at Milrem Robotics. “The project promotes innovation and cooperation among European nations, ensuring that future AI-based autonomous systems can operate seamlessly together on the battlefield.”
Work begins immediately with conceptual, operational, and technical development across several domains. Partners will refine operational concepts, architectures, and technologies that support manned–unmanned teaming, autonomous functions, secure communications, and electronic protection.
In parallel, the project will advance system integration, lifecycle efficiency, and interoperability to prepare for future demonstrations and deployment. These efforts aim to create resilient, cost-effective, and future-ready unmanned systems for European defence.
iMUGS2 has a total value of about €55 million, with almost €50 million provided by EDF funding. Its goals are to develop and demonstrate combat-ready unmanned ground systems for dismounted troops, define operational concepts that integrate unmanned ground and aerial systems into battalion-level operations, and advance modular open architectures and lifecycle management frameworks that ensure interoperability over time.
The consortium brings together 29 partners from 15 EU member states, including large companies, mid-sized firms, SMEs, and research institutes. Their combined experience supports a comprehensive programme aimed at addressing technical challenges and delivering effective defence solutions.
