This deployment underlines the UK’s strategic commitment to global security through advanced technology and multinational collaboration. Operating across the Mediterranean, Middle East, Indian Ocean, and Pacific, Operation Highmast aims to strengthen defence ties through high-end exercises with global allies.
The F-35B Lightning II, a fifth-generation stealth fighter, will be at the forefront of the mission, demonstrating its versatility across land and sea. Its multi-role capabilities include precision air-to-surface strikes, electronic warfare, reconnaissance, and air-to-air combat operations.
“This Operation is a key milestone for the Lightning programme, highlighting our progress towards achieving full operational capability for the F-35 in the UK,” said Group Captain John Butcher, Lightning Air Wing Commander. “By deploying two F-35 Squadrons, we are enhancing our ability to effectively support our allies in the region,” he added.
A key feature of the mission will be participation in Exercise Talisman Sabre, hosted by Australia and involving 19 nations. This large-scale joint exercise will emphasise the UK’s role in promoting Indo-Pacific security through robust international cooperation.
The deployment also provides a vital opportunity to improve military interoperability and test how allied forces integrate advanced systems in real-world conditions. The presence of state-of-the-art ships and aircraft, including the F-35B, signals a new phase in the evolution of UK carrier strike capabilities.
