The F-35A Lightning II, a multi-role stealth fighter, forms the backbone of Australia’s air defence and strike force, alongside the EA-18G Growler and F/A-18F Super Hornets, as outlined in the 2024 National Defence Strategy. Equipped for air-to-air and air-to-surface missions, the F-35A boasts stealth technology, advanced countermeasures, and electronic warfare capabilities to ensure both lethality and survivability in diverse combat scenarios.
The latest nine aircraft are the first in the fleet to feature Technology Refresh 3, allowing for Block 4 upgrades. These advancements support enhanced capabilities to address evolving future threats, reinforcing Australia’s commitment to maintaining a cutting-edge defence force.
Air Marshal Stephen Chappell, Chief of Air Force, highlighted the importance of this achievement, stating: “The delivery of the final F-35A Lightning II aircraft is a practical demonstration of the Air Force’s ability to deliver highly effective air power as part of an integrated and focused force, in line with the National Defence Strategy.”
Australian industry has played a critical role in the program’s success, with over 75 local companies securing more than $4.8 billion in contracts. This contribution spans production, sustainment, and follow-on development within the F-35 global supply chain, showcasing the integration of national expertise in advancing defence capabilities.
Air Marshal Chappell added, “Australians should be proud that our Air Force is flying the most advanced multi-role fighter in the world.” With this milestone achieved, the RAAF is well-positioned to address emerging challenges and safeguard Australia’s national security.
