Fincantieri has held the keel-laying ceremony for the first next-generation U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) for the Italian Navy at its Muggiano shipyard. The event forms part of a programme for the construction of four submarines and the development of related logistic support, managed and entrusted to OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation), an international organisation responsible for cooperative defence programmes.

Delivery of the first U212NFS is scheduled for 2029. The new submarine class is described as a substantial evolution of the U212A, with greater design maturity, a higher level of national technological content and improved integration of onboard systems.

Fincantieri stated that innovations developed by Italian industry include a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat system. According to the company, these developments are intended to provide greater stealth, endurance, efficiency and cyber resilience.

The company said the U212NFS programme contributes to preserving and enhancing national industrial know-how. It added that the initiative consolidates the technological position of Fincantieri and the wider Italian supply chain through increased development of components within the country, and reinforces the strategic role of the Muggiano shipyard, which has more than a century of activity and has built over one hundred submarines for the national underwater component.
