Fincantieri has laid the keel for the Italian Navy’s second U212NFS submarine at its Muggiano shipyard. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2030 under a programme covering four submarines and associated logistics support.

The U212NFS, or Near Future Submarine, programme is managed by OCCAR, the international organisation responsible for cooperative defence programmes. Fincantieri is the design authority and prime contractor, with Italian suppliers contributing new onboard technologies.

The class builds on its U212A predecessors through greater design maturity, more Italian-developed technology and enhanced integration of onboard systems. Its equipment includes a lithium-ion propulsion battery and a new combat management system.

Fincantieri said these innovations would improve stealth, endurance, efficiency and cyber resilience. The programme also supports the retention of national industrial expertise and the development of Italy’s submarine manufacturing capabilities.

Recent contractual additions have expanded activities involving new technological capabilities and integrated logistics support. According to Fincantieri, this strengthens its ability to support the submarines throughout their lifecycle.

Muggiano has built more than 100 submarines over more than a century. The latest keel-laying maintains production continuity within the U212NFS programme, combining the yard’s construction expertise with technology from Italy’s industrial supply chain.
