Forecasts for the underwater segment indicate revenues of around €660 million and €720 million in 2025 and 2026, respectively, with EBITDA margins of 17.4% and 18.0%. These margins are expected to rise to nearly 19% by 2027, outperforming Fincantieri’s traditional shipbuilding activities.
Fincantieri views the underwater domain as a strategic area for security, energy, environmental monitoring, and underwater communications. To spearhead its development, the company has established the Underwater Technology Hub, an integrated industrial structure aimed at consolidating civil, military, and dual-use system activities under a single management structure.
The Hub combines Fincantieri’s expertise in submarine design and construction, WASS Submarine Systems’ technologies, IDS – Ingegneria dei Sistemi’s unmanned systems, radar, and advanced communications capabilities, and Remazel Engineering’s experience in topside systems for autonomous vehicle operations. This comprehensive approach aims to position Fincantieri as a leader in the underwater transformation market, valued at €50 billion annually.
Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, stated: “The consolidation of cross-sector demand in defense, dual-use, and civilian applications is making underwater technology a strategic priority for governments and industries. Fincantieri is thus ready to turn its competitive advantage into industrial leadership, capitalizing on the Group’s long-standing experience, clear vision, and integrated operating model.”
Fincantieri also announced a new Memorandum of Understanding between IDS and Graal Tech S.r.l., an Italian leader in underwater mechatronics. The agreement focuses on the joint development and commercialization of small and medium-sized autonomous underwater vehicles, as well as the creation of a national center for testing, qualification, and training.
The partnership with Graal Tech will strengthen Fincantieri’s role as both a system integrator and a developer of enabling technologies. By involving local firms, Fincantieri aims to enhance the national industrial ecosystem while advancing capabilities in underwater robotics.
Folgiero added: “Our unique positioning as a full-line player enables us to generate scale, cross-segment synergies, and the optimization of our industrial footprint. We’re already shaping a portfolio aligned with the operational needs of both the national system and our international partners.”
