The Boxer vehicle has been manufactured at Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) in Telford as part of the UK’s Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) Programme. The programme began in 2019 when the Ministry of Defence awarded the contract through OCCAR to ARTEC GmbH, a joint venture between Rheinmetall and KNDS. Production was subcontracted to RBSL and KNDS UK, involving a range of UK suppliers.
Rheinmetall has invested £56 million into the Telford facility, equipping it with modern fabrication lines for armoured steel, advanced surface treatment systems, and assembly lines for both Drive and Mission Modules. Approximately 75% of the vehicle’s components are sourced from UK-based suppliers, contributing to over 1,000 skilled jobs in areas such as engineering and systems integration.
The Boxer has undergone a series of trials in the UK to confirm its performance and reliability. Tests included live firing at Lulworth Ranges, electromagnetic compatibility assessments, and extreme climate evaluations at Millbrook Proving Ground. Additionally, water-fording trials demonstrated the vehicle’s stability and control in unprepared crossings.
Boxer’s successful testing highlights its readiness for deployment and its ability to meet the British Army’s diverse operational requirements. The vehicle is designed to deliver adaptability and resilience, enhancing the capabilities of the UK’s Future Force.
The Boxer programme has significant economic implications, with over 100 UK suppliers involved in its production. The domestic sourcing of components strengthens the supply chain and contributes to the UK’s defence manufacturing capacity.
Minister Maria Eagle commented on the project’s significance, stating: “The British-made Boxer showcases the expertise of our Defence Industry and supports our strategic goal of driving skilled job creation across the UK.”
John Abunassar, CEO of Rheinmetall UK, highlighted the broader impact, noting: “The Boxer is a key component of UK defence manufacturing, ensuring the British Army is equipped for future challenges while supporting economic growth.”
The production of the Boxer in Telford signals a revival of armoured vehicle manufacturing in the UK. With full-scale production set to begin this year, the programme reflects a collaborative approach to bolstering the nation’s defence capabilities and economic resilience. The vehicle’s adaptability and proven performance ensure its role as a critical asset for future operations.
