The F-35A is a single-seat aircraft with no two-seat trainer variant, requiring pilots to undergo extensive preparation before their first flight. In accordance with standard procedures, an instructor monitored the flight from a separate aircraft, providing guidance as necessary.
Six Polish pilots are currently training at Ebbing following the completion of a 12-week theoretical and simulator course at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. In total, 24 pilots have been selected for F-35 training, beginning with experienced F-16C/D pilots from Poland’s air bases in Krzesiny and Łask.
The training programme consists of seven groups of pilots, with two undergoing a specialised 10-month instructor course. The remaining pilots will complete a six-month training programme before returning to Poland for operational service.
In addition to pilot training, 92 Polish Air Force technicians are set to undergo maintenance training for the F-35A. The first group is scheduled to begin training in the third quarter of 2025, with completion expected by late 2026. Subsequent training groups will take place in Poland, with 17 technicians receiving instructor-level qualifications.
Poland’s first eight F-35A aircraft will be based in the United States for training purposes. The first aircraft deliveries to Poland are scheduled for 2026, with all 32 jets set to be delivered by 2030.
