The introduction of the F-35 represents a technological leap in modern air combat. Featuring advanced stealth capabilities, electronic warfare systems, and sensor fusion, the aircraft is designed to dominate in contested airspace and enhance the United States’ defensive strategy.
Stationed at Jacksonville, the 125th FW will play a crucial role in strengthening U.S. airpower along the southeastern coastline. The city’s strategic location, home to both Naval Station Mayport and Naval Air Station Jacksonville, allows for enhanced joint-force operations with the Navy and Marine Corps.
The transition to the F-35 will further reinforce Florida’s role as a key national security hub. The aircraft will eventually replace the unit’s ageing fleet, becoming the primary platform for safeguarding the southeastern United States against emerging threats.
Col. Mansour Elhihi, commander of the 125th FW, highlighted the strategic importance of the new aircraft. “The F-35 is a cornerstone of our national defence,” he said. “This advanced aircraft ensures we are ready to respond, dominate, and succeed in any operational environment.”
In preparation for the F-35’s integration, the 125th FW is upgrading its infrastructure. Investments include modernised hangars, expanded maintenance facilities, and cutting-edge training simulators to support pilots and ground crews.
Maj. Gen. John D. Haas, Adjutant General of the Florida National Guard, emphasised the broader significance of the transition. “The F-35 ensures the Air National Guard remains at the forefront of national defence,” he stated. “It represents modernisation and ensures our airmen remain ready and relevant in an evolving security landscape.”
The aircraft’s arrival aligns with the Department of Defense’s Agile Combat Employment (ACE) strategy. This initiative focuses on rapid deployment, decentralised operations, and resilience, ensuring that forces can adapt to contested environments and maintain strategic flexibility.
Pilots and maintenance crews are currently undergoing intensive training with advanced simulators and mission planning tools. These resources will maximise the capabilities of the F-35 and prepare personnel for a new generation of air combat.
“The F-35 is going to redefine how we operate,” Haas added. “It’s not just about winning wars—it’s about deterring them before they start.”
To mark the milestone, the 125th FW will host a ‘Thunder and Lightning Launch Celebration’ later this year. The event will offer key community leaders, service members, and their families a first-hand look at the future of air combat.
