France: ASMPA-R missile successfully fired from Rafale B fighter

By Defence Industry Europe

The French Ministry of Armed Forces announced the successful evaluation of the upgraded ASMPA-R air-to-surface medium-range missile, marking a significant milestone in France's defence capabilities. This test, conducted as part of Operation DURANDAL, took place over the DGA Essais de Missiles test range off Biscarrosse.

The ASMPA-R missile, launched from a Rafale B fighter jet, completed a simulated nuclear raid without a warhead. This exercise demonstrated the missile’s enhanced performance, reliability, and integration with the Rafale’s weapon systems. The operation was supported by A330 Phénix tanker aircraft, additional Rafale B jets, and involved coordination between multiple branches of the French military.

This test signifies a critical step in maintaining and enhancing France’s nuclear deterrence capabilities. The ASMPA-R missile, an improved version of the original ASMPA missile in service since 2009, incorporates advanced technologies to ensure its effectiveness and credibility. The Directorate General of Armament (DGA) oversaw the development and testing phases, ensuring the missile meets stringent performance criteria.
