France considers development of medium-range ballistic missiles

By Defence Industry Europe

France is weighing the development of medium-range ballistic missiles (MRBMs), as outlined in a new report by the National Assembly on the country’s conventional deterrence needs. The proposed missiles would serve as an intermediate option between the nuclear-armed M51 ballistic missiles and conventional weapons.

The report describes the construction of such capabilities as a “priority issue” for France, with the aim of introducing the new missiles into service by 2030. These missiles are expected to have a range of over 2,000 kilometres, be land-launched, and carry conventional warheads.

Detailed specifications for the MRBMs are still being developed. However, it is already known that the weapon system could be deployed outside of French territory.

The report does not exclude the possibility of integrating the new weapon into an international initiative. Relevant projects include the European Long Range Strike Approach (ELSA), which involves Poland, and the British-German long-range armament programme under the Trinity House Agreement.
