France: DGA conducts first flight of Dassault Aviation’s Archange new-generation intelligence aircraft

By Defence Industry Europe

France’s defence procurement agency, the Direction générale de l’armement (DGA), has announced the successful first flight of the aircraft developed under the Archange programme. This marks a significant step forward for the country’s strategic intelligence capabilities.

The Archange programme involves the transformation of Dassault Aviation Falcon 8X business jets into advanced intelligence platforms. These aircraft will be used by the French Air and Space Force to detect and analyse radar and communication signals.

According to the DGA, the programme aims to deliver three such aircraft by the end of the 2024–2030 Military Planning Law period. These new assets will enhance France’s ability to gather and interpret critical strategic information.

The aircraft are being fitted with a complex mission system developed by Thales DMS and Thales SIX, incorporating advanced technologies and high-performance sensors. The system provides an unprecedented level of complementarity in detecting communication signals and radar emissions.

Dassault Aviation is responsible for modifying the aircraft to meet the specific requirements of the Archange programme. The aircraft will strengthen France’s electromagnetic intelligence capabilities and improve its operational superiority.

A full training and support system is also being developed as part of the programme. This includes dedicated facilities and services to ensure long-term readiness and operational efficiency.

“This first flight is the result of several years of collaboration between leading industrial partners and the DGA,” the agency stated in its announcement. “It demonstrates a collective commitment to strengthening France’s defence capabilities, its decision-making sovereignty, and the operational superiority of its armed forces.”
