France receives 12th Airbus A330MRTT Phénix aircraft

By Defence Industry Europe

On September 20, the French Directorate General of Armament (DGA) announced the reception and delivery of the twelfth Airbus A330MRTT Phénix multi-role transport and refueling aircraft to the French Air and Space Force.

This marks the conclusion of the first batch of orders for A330MRTT aircraft placed by the DGA for the needs of the French Armed Force. The next three aircraft, ordered in August 2020, are set to be delivered starting in 2025. They are currently undergoing the process of installing mission equipment according to the configuration chosen by the DGA.

The delivery of the twelve Airbus A330MRTT Phénix aircraft has been completed over almost five years. The DGA received its first aircraft from Airbus Defence and Space in October 2018.

These aircraft play a crucial role in replacing the aging Boeing KC-135FR Stratotanker aerial refueling aircraft currently in service with the French military. The new aircraft enable the expansion of the operational capabilities of the French air force, allowing for rapid deployment and mission commencement anywhere in the world in less than 48 hours, as highlighted by the DGA.
