The new platform will be low cost, modular, and designed to host a wide range of operationally relevant payloads and technologies. The goal is to implement a scalable business model allowing for high-volume production to meet growing defence needs.
“This contract is the first step in a strategic partnership with the Dutch MoD that will ultimately contribute to the defense of Ukraine and NATO by creating a versatile European defense system,” said GA-ASI CEO Linden Blue. GA-ASI is a global leader in unmanned aerial systems (UAS), building on its existing ties with the Netherlands to support Europe’s defence posture.
As part of the initial phase, GA-ASI and the Dutch MoD will jointly establish manufacturing capacity for the system. Minister for Arms Procurement and Personnel Gijs Tuinman stated: “Together with GA we will be increasing innovative SUAS capabilities and advancing technical knowhow in the Netherlands.”
Tuinman also said, “This project is an example of strategic trans-Atlantic collaboration that supports our defense and technological base as we contribute to the defense of Ukraine and NATO by creating a versatile European defense system and working with a strong U.S. partner.” Dutch firm VDL Defentec has been selected by GA-ASI to carry out contract manufacturing for the SUAS.
VDL Defentec, which specialises in military and special-purpose systems, will work closely with GA-ASI on design, production and logistics. “We are excited having been selected by General Atomics and we are proud to support Dutch MOD to create, together with GA-ASI, this unique capability for the Netherlands making our country and our allies more resilient,” said Paul Malcontent, managing director of VDL Defentec.
The first test flight of the new aircraft is planned before the end of 2025. Low-rate initial production is expected to begin in 2026 in both the United States and the Netherlands.
