GDELS to supply PIRANHA 5 vehicles for German Army’s TaWAN project

By Defence Industry Europe

General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) has been selected to supply its PIRANHA 5 armoured vehicles for the German Army’s TaWAN project. This initiative aims to modernise the Bundeswehr's long-range telecommunications network, enhancing operational connectivity.

The initial order consists of 58 PIRANHA vehicles, with a potential total procurement of up to 256 units. The contract is valued in the three-digit million range, and the first series vehicles are scheduled for delivery in 2026.

GDELS is partnering with Rheinmetall, which is the prime contractor for the TaWAN programme. The PIRANHA 5 will feature a 15-metre telescopic mast system, allowing it to function as a highly mobile, armoured communication hub.

A similar communication variant, the PIRANHA 3 KOMPAK, has been in service with the Swiss Army for several years. The PIRANHA 5’s integration into the TaWAN project is expected to provide the German military with a modern and reliable communication solution.

To ensure efficient maintenance and operational readiness, GDELS will establish a system support centre in Neubrandenburg. This facility will provide technical and logistical support for the PIRANHA 5 fleet throughout its service life.

Dr. Thomas Kauffmann, Vice President and Managing Director of GDELS–Deutschland, expressed pride in the Bundeswehr’s trust in the company. He confirmed that manufacturing and sustainment capabilities will be established in Germany to support the project.

Antonio Bueno, President of GDELS, highlighted the company’s commitment to its partnership with the German Army. He emphasised GDELS’ dedication to strengthening its role in Germany’s defence industry and ensuring long-term support for the Bundeswehr.
