General Atomics to supply payload tubes for U.S. Navy’s Virginia-class submarines

By Defence Industry Europe

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) has been awarded a contract by General Dynamics Electric Boat to manufacture and deliver three shipsets of Virginia Payload Tubes (VPTs) for Block VI Virginia-class submarines. Each shipset consists of two payload tubes, with delivery scheduled for completion by the end of 2030.

This contract follows a previous 2023 award for a single VPT shipset, which qualified GA-EMS as a supplier with proven manufacturing capability for safety-critical submarine components. “We are excited to continue working with Electric Boat to apply our world-class fabrication and precision machining capabilities, experienced program management, and engineering and quality assurance expertise to help ensure the VPTs are available on time to support an aggressive Virginia-class build schedule,” said Scott Forney, President of GA-EMS.

As the submarine industrial base expands amid supply chain and workforce challenges, GA-EMS aims to provide the capacity needed to support long-term procurement and sustainment programmes. “We look forward to providing the critical capacity necessary to support multi-year procurement and sustainment programs such as this,” said Rolf Ziesing, Vice President of GA-EMS Maritime Programs.

GA-EMS has a history of supplying components and systems for the U.S. Navy, including electromagnetic aircraft launch and arresting gear systems for Ford-class aircraft carriers. With ongoing expansion of its manufacturing capabilities and workforce at its Tupelo and Iuka, Mississippi facilities, the company continues to support naval shipbuilding with complex, high-precision components.
