General Christopher Cavoli: Russian army has lost over four thousand tanks in Ukraine

Russia has lost more than 4,000 tanks since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to a senior U.S. military official. General Christopher Cavoli, head of the U.S. European Command, revealed the figure during a hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Thursday.

“The Russians have lost more than 4,000 tanks, which is the inventory almost of the United States tank corps,” General Cavoli stated. He described the intensity of the ongoing conflict as “awe-inspiring”, highlighting its exceptional scale and scope.

The war, initially intended to be a swift operation by Moscow, has turned into a prolonged and costly confrontation. Russia’s expectation of a quick victory over its smaller neighbour has instead resulted in heavy losses and a drawn-out conflict.

During the hearing, General Cavoli also addressed concerns about the potential consequences of reduced U.S. support for Ukraine. “It would obviously have a rapid and deleterious effect on their ability to fight,” he warned.

He explained that Ukraine relies heavily on US aid, particularly for air defence against Russian missile attacks. In addition, American intelligence plays a vital role in helping Ukrainian forces target Russian command centres and supply lines.

The warning comes amid ongoing political debate in Washington over future military and intelligence assistance to Kyiv. Earlier this year, the administration of former President Donald Trump temporarily withheld support following tensions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Cavoli’s comments underline the strategic importance of continued U.S. backing for Ukraine’s defence efforts. They also illustrate the severe toll the war has taken on Russian military resources more than two years after the invasion began.
