German Army acquires Black Hornet 4 nano-drones from Teledyne FLIR Defense

By Defence Industry Europe

The German Army has placed an order with Teledyne FLIR Defense for the delivery of Black Hornet 4 Personal Reconnaissance Systems. The contract, facilitated through European Logistic Partners (ELP) GmbH, forms part of a two-year agreement with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

Black Hornet 4 is the latest generation of lightweight nano-drones designed to provide enhanced situational awareness to small military units. Equipped with a 12-megapixel daytime camera and a high-resolution thermal imager, the system delivers high-quality video and images to operators in real-time.

Weighing just 70 grams, the Black Hornet 4 can fly for over 30 minutes and cover distances of more than two kilometres. The drone is also built to function in challenging conditions, operating in winds of up to 25 knots and rainy weather, while featuring advanced obstacle avoidance technology.

Teledyne FLIR Defense, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, expressed its commitment to supporting the German armed forces. “We’re proud to work with the Bundeswehr and ELP to deliver the unmatched capabilities of Black Hornet 4,” said Ketil Vanebo, Vice President of UAS Norway Operations at Teledyne FLIR Defense.

The Black Hornet drone system has seen growing adoption across Europe as military forces respond to increasing global tensions. More than 33,000 Black Hornet UAVs have been supplied to security and military forces in over 45 countries, including Ukrainian combat units, where they have been successfully deployed in operational environments.

Developed and manufactured in Norway, the Black Hornet has gained recognition for its stealth, ease of deployment, and advanced reconnaissance capabilities.
