The cooperation will see POLARIS’ unmanned aerial carrier systems integrated with Diehl Defence’s IRIS-T air-to-air guided missiles. The resulting AirLAS system aims to deliver extended range and enhanced operational flexibility for armed forces.
“The aim of the agreement is to equip POLARIS’ unmanned aerial carrier systems with effectors from Diehl Defence,” stated the companies. “The IRIS-T air-to-air guided missile is to be integrated on an unmanned POLARIS carrier system.”
This new system combines a reusable, flight-proven UAV platform with a combat-tested missile, offering a cost-effective and adaptable solution for modern defence challenges. Designed for multi-domain operations, AirLAS is expected to support a variety of mission scenarios.
Key features of the system include affordability, long operational range, and rapid deployment across different environments. Initial flight tests of the integrated system are scheduled to take place later this year.
According to the developers, AirLAS holds strong potential for future integration with the Future Combat Air System and for use in maritime operations. It may also support future long-range hypersonic systems, reflecting the adaptability and scalability of the concept.
“The AirLAS approach creates a new dynamic and provides the armed forces with a full-scale expansion of capabilities,” the companies confirmed. The system is designed to meet evolving demands in ground-based air defence through innovative integration of existing technologies.
