Germany and Norway will jointly develop the new supersonic guided missile, named the Super Sonic Strike Missile (3SM) Tyrfing. The frigates of both countries will be equipped with these missiles for engaging sea and land targets. Key requirements include supersonic capability, improved mission control, and all-weather operability. The Super Sonic Strike Missile will feature in-flight manoeuvrability and advanced seeker technology for target acquisition. Additionally, the warhead will have adjustable effects to minimise collateral damage around the target.
The Norwegian defence company Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace will be the main contractor for the development, with participation from German industry. Norway will take the lead role in developing the supersonic missile. The project will be funded through the Bundeswehr’s special fund until 2027, and from the defence budget starting in 2028. The development is expected to be completed in the early 2030s.
Germany and Norway have established a strategic partnership in defence projects, particularly in maritime collaboration. Last year, the construction of the 212CD-class submarines commenced under German leadership at tkMS in Kiel.
