The framework contract allows for up to 191,000 SmG sets over seven years, with a potential total value of around €400 million. Because the Bundestag’s Budget Committee set conditions on the project, only 60,000 sets were initially ordered for delivery in 2024 and 2025.
The first two delivery lots, financed by the special fund and worth around €150 million net, include additional items such as connection cables. According to Rheinmetall, both lots will be fully delivered by the end of 2025.
The SmG is a key element of individual soldier equipment and includes active ear defenders that reduce harmful impulse noise while amplifying quiet sounds. The system has a microphone and can be connected to multiple radio devices to enable voice communication.
Each delivery also includes several push-to-talk buttons and optional cable sets for links to different radios and on-board communication systems. Rheinmetall has subcontracted 3M Peltor for the ComTac VIII headset and CEOTRONICS AG for CT-Multi PTT 1C and 3C units, WPTT, and cables.
The headset system is compatible with Rheinmetall’s new combat helmet as well as other helmets used by the German Armed Forces. With the latest order, the company highlights its leading role in soldier equipment, including its position as prime contractor for the Future Soldier System – Advanced System.
