Germany’s defence ministry has presented a long-term development plan for the Bundeswehr. Berlin aims to build the strongest conventional armed forces in Europe, with more than €350 billion earmarked for modernisation by 2041.

This year Germany intends to spend €8.2 billion on arms procurement. According to the draft budget for next year, that figure is set to rise to €22.3 billion.

The highest level of equipment expenditure is projected for 2029 and 2030, when annual spending will exceed €52 billion. This period is expected to mark the peak of the Bundeswehr’s modernisation drive.

Ammunition will be the most important area of spending, with €70.3 billion allocated over the period. Other priorities include combat vehicles (€52.5 billion), aircraft and missile ammunition (€34.2 billion), as well as naval vessels and equipment (€36.6 billion).

Forthcoming transactions will include the purchase of 20 Eurofighter Typhoon multirole aircraft and up to 5,000 Boxer wheeled armoured personnel carriers in various versions, including an air defence variant with the Skyranger system. Plans also cover 3,500 armoured personnel carriers to replace the Fuchs and hundreds of Leopard 2 main battle tanks.
