Hanwha brings tracked and wheeled K9 artillery systems to AUSA 2025 for U.S. market

By Defence Industry Europe

Hanwha Defense signed an execution contract on August 26 to supply K9 Thunder Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPHs) to Poland.

Hanwha Defense USA (HDUSA) will present its combat-proven artillery systems, including the K9 self-propelled howitzer, at the Association of the U.S. Army’s (AUSA) Annual Meeting & Exposition from October 13–15 in Washington, D.C. The company aims to support the U.S. Army’s modernisation goals in line with the AUSA 2025 theme: “Agile, Adaptive, Lethal: Winning at the Pace of Change.”

On display will be the K9 (A1) 155 mm, 52-calibre tracked howitzer and the newly announced wheeled K9 (A2) variant for the U.S. market. The wheeled version, which integrates K9 turret technology onto an 8×8 truck platform with fully automated firing, is paired with a K10-derived resupply system.

Hanwha emphasises that both howitzer types are built under a common gun system (CGS), allowing the U.S. Army to adopt a mix of wheeled and tracked platforms without requiring separate training or logistics systems. The modular K9 system is already in use with more than a dozen U.S. allies, including several NATO members on the eastern flank.

“HDUSA combines proven artillery and munitions technology with disciplined, repeatable execution, which is precisely what the Army demands as it accelerates force modernization,” said Mike Smith, President and CEO of Hanwha Defense USA. “We are ready to rapidly adapt to U.S. requirements, integrate with existing command-and-control systems and move quickly with strong U.S.-based industry partnerships to strengthen America’s readiness.”

“Though there are a number of critical elements, two things matter most—first, delivering proven operational firepower that shapes the battlespace and second, the enablement of scaled-production using mature, advanced manufacturing processes,” Smith added. “Accelerating the Army’s transformation into an even more lethal force is the decisive advantage that Hanwha is uniquely positioned to deliver.”

Hanwha’s U.S. strategy includes co-development and technology transfer efforts aimed at strengthening domestic production capabilities. The company is building U.S. partnerships to enhance supply chain resilience, increase manufacturing speed, and improve allied interoperability.

Hanwha will also highlight munitions-related investments, including opportunities for U.S.-based production of 155 mm modular charge systems (MACS), solid rocket motors (SRM), base bleed units (BBU), and other critical components. These efforts aim to expand the U.S. munitions industrial base and ensure quicker delivery to field units.

Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace, continues to grow its U.S. presence through local hiring, industrial collaboration, and strategic acquisitions. The company’s goal is to serve as a long-term contributor to America’s combat vehicle and munitions readiness.
