Hanwha Ocean signs USD 578.7 million contract for next-generation FFX Batch IV frigates

By Defence Industry Europe

South Korean shipbuilding company Hanwha Ocean has announced a major contract with the Defence Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) to construct two advanced FFX Batch IV frigates. The deal, valued at approximately USD 578.7 million, marks the start of the fourth and final phase of the FFX programme, designed to replace ageing Ulsan-class frigates currently in service.

Under this contract, Hanwha Ocean will build the first two vessels of the Batch IV series, which is set to comprise six ships in total. These new frigates will maintain similar dimensions and profiles to the previous Batch III units but will incorporate state-of-the-art weaponry, electronic warfare systems, and cutting-edge electronic equipment.

Key advancements include the integration of the LiG Nex1-developed Electronic Warfare Equipment-II and the CIWS-II (Close-In Weapon System) for direct defence. Additional armaments will feature the SSM-710K C-Star anti-ship missiles, Red Shark K-ASROC rocket torpedoes, Sea Dragon cruise missiles, and K-SAAM surface-to-air missiles. The primary artillery system will remain the 127 mm/62 calibre BAE Systems Mk 45 Mod 4 gun, carried over from Batch III.

Hanwha Ocean emphasised the importance of this programme in advancing South Korea’s naval capabilities. “This project underscores our commitment to delivering state-of-the-art vessels that strengthen our defence infrastructure,” a company spokesperson noted.

The FFX Batch IV programme represents a critical upgrade to South Korea’s naval fleet. Of the original nine Ulsan-class frigates built, only two – the Busan (FF 959) and Cheongju (FF 961), both commissioned in 1992 – remain in active service. The new frigates will ensure enhanced operational readiness and modernised capabilities for years to come.
