Helsing and Saab Germany have signed a contract worth a three-digit million-euro sum to equip the Eurofighter with a new Electronic Warfare system that incorporates Helsing’s artificial intelligence. Under the agreement, Helsing will provide its AI-based Cirra software for integration into Saab’s Arexis sensor suite over the next three years.

The combined hardware and software will enable the Eurofighter to undertake combat missions and neutralise enemy air defence systems. According to the companies, the upgrade is designed to support operations even against modern air forces with comparable resources.

Initially, the Eurofighter will be enhanced as a standalone air capability. In the longer term, the system is planned to improve the performance of other Luftwaffe combat aircraft through collaborative data sharing.

Helsing’s Cirra software is aimed at countering adaptive and dynamic air defence radars. Using deep learning, Cirra classifies unknown air defence emitters and interprets their intentions directly on board the aircraft, enabling real-time threat assessment and intent recognition. The companies state that this significantly boosts fighter survivability and provides allied air crews with complete situational awareness.

To demonstrate capability and reduce programme risk, Helsing has already integrated Cirra into a flying testbed in recent months. Company-owned test and evaluation flights have also been completed as part of this preparation phase.

Saab Germany and Helsing were first selected in 2023 by the German Federal Ministry of Defence to deliver Electronic Warfare capabilities for 15 Luftwaffe Eurofighters. With the contract now finalised and the concept phase completed over the past 18 months, system integration will begin in cooperation with Airbus Defence and Space.

Gundbert Scherf, co-founder and co-CEO of Helsing, stated: “Following intensive testing and investment, we look forward to moving into the development phase together with Saab. This step underscores our ability to rapidly develop, test, and introduce new technologies in close collaboration with industry partners.”
