German defence firm Hensoldt and UAV specialist Avilus have announced a strategic partnership focused on the development and marketing of cutting-edge sensor and ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) systems for unmanned aerial platforms. The collaboration aims to deliver scalable UAV solutions “Made in Germany” by combining Hensoldt’s advanced sensor technology with Avilus’s agile production capabilities.

Central to the cooperation is the integration of Hensoldt’s high-performance sensors – including the AMPS-M self-protection system, the PrecISR radar, and a multi-sensor electro-optical suite – with Avilus’s ‘MissMarvin’ mission operating system. These components will be deployed across UAV platforms suitable for both military and civilian use, with an emphasis on rapid availability and operational flexibility.

“With Avilus, we have an agile UAV specialist at our side who can optimally leverage our state-of-the-art sensor solutions. Together, we are focusing on technological sovereignty and short paths from development to operational readiness – for powerful and resilient UAV expertise in Germany,” said Christina Canitz, Head of Division Optronics at Hensoldt.

Avilus will bring its experience in unmanned systems tailored to casualty evacuation, logistics and reconnaissance, which are designed for robustness and field-readiness. “Avilus closes specific capability gaps in casualty evacuation, logistics and reconnaissance with robust, unmanned aerial systems. The focus is on operational proximity, reliability and rapid availability. Through close cooperation with Hensoldt, we combine our platforms with state-of-the-art sensor technology, thus creating immediate added value for forces in the field,” stated Avilus CEO Ernst Rittinghaus.

The integrated electro-optical system supports detection, classification and object tracking using multispectral sensors and AI-driven real-time processing. It incorporates HD thermal imaging, colour/low-light, SWIR and wide-angle cameras, all available simultaneously and controlled through a high-precision 4-axis gimbal.

The AMPS-M protection suite combines up to 16 decoy launchers with various missile, laser and radar threat warning sensors. With more than 700 systems in global use and thousands of flight hours, the system is modular, low-maintenance and NATO-tested.

PrecISR, a software-defined X-band radar using AESA technology, enables the simultaneous tracking of over 1,000 targets across land, sea and air in all weather conditions. It is scalable, easy to integrate, and not subject to ITAR regulations, making it ideal for multiple UAV types.

With civil flight approval from Germany’s Federal Aviation Authority and a ‘company owned, company operated’ model, the partnership targets diverse applications including disaster response, infrastructure surveillance and border protection. The alliance reflects Hensoldt’s strategy to drive innovation through “software-defined defence” and targeted cooperation, with initial pilot projects and demonstrations already underway.
