The European Common Radar System Mark 1 (ECRS Mk1) is a next-generation radar system designed for the air forces of Germany and Spain. The E-Scan radar will enhance the Eurofighter’s performance in both air-to-air and air-to-ground operations, while also introducing electronic warfare capabilities.
Developed by a consortium that includes Germany’s HENSOLDT Sensors GmbH and Spain’s Indra Sistemas S.A., the radar system is part of a broader industrial collaboration. Together with Airbus Defence and Space, the companies are responsible for the development, certification, and production of this advanced military technology.
The contract extension covers the delivery of test systems for Germany’s Airbus A320 D-ATRA radar test aircraft, along with improvements to the Mk1 Step 1 radar system. These advancements mark a significant technological step forward, ensuring the long-term operational effectiveness and adaptability of the system.
Additionally, the agreement includes an initial development phase for ECRS Mk1 Step 2, further enhancing radar capabilities. The integration of Airbus Defence and Space’s Attack & Identify system will reduce pilot workload and improve mission effectiveness.
“The contract extension ensures the development of an air-certifiable, robust Eurofighter Mk1 radar for Germany and Spain. Our goal is to start flight testing of the revised radar at the end of 2025. Installation of the Mk1 Step 1 on the German Quadriga Eurofighters is then scheduled to begin in the course of 2027,” said Frank Döngi, Head of Eurofighter Radar.
