The redelivery marks the conclusion of a maintenance and upgrade period that typically follows the delivery of new vessels. The submarine was formally returned to the Navy on Friday.
The post-shakedown availability period included upgrades to combat systems and onboard electronics. It also involved general maintenance to ensure the submarine’s operational readiness.
“Maintaining our nation’s undersea maritime supremacy is strengthened by the redelivery of USS New Jersey,” said Jason Ward, vice president of new construction submarine programs at Newport News Shipbuilding. “Our combined NNS-Navy team is focused on the mission and understands the importance of getting this submarine to the fleet.”
HII said the work reflects ongoing collaboration between the shipbuilder and the U.S. Navy. The company emphasized the role of such efforts in supporting fleet readiness and operational capability.
Newport News Shipbuilding is one of the primary builders of U.S. Navy submarines. The Virginia-class platform is designed for a range of missions, including intelligence gathering, surveillance and undersea warfare.
HII described itself as the largest shipbuilder in the United States. The company also noted its position as a leading producer of unmanned underwater vehicles for the U.S. Navy and global customers.
The redelivery of USS New Jersey represents a key milestone in the vessel’s operational lifecycle. Officials said the submarine is now ready to return to fleet operations.
