Honeywell announced on 28 May that its advanced F124 turbofan engine is being proposed for key defence programmes in Japan, marking an expansion of the company’s role in supporting the Japan Air Self-Defense Force’s (JASDF) fleet modernisation. The engine is under consideration for the replacement of the T-4 trainer aircraft and the future Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) initiative.

The F124 is noted for its exceptional thrust-to-weight ratio and low-maintenance, modular design. It currently powers platforms such as the Leonardo M346, demonstrating strong performance and reliability in advanced jet trainer roles.

“Japan’s defence modernization is accelerating, and Honeywell is actively engaging to support this transformation with the proven capabilities of the F124 engine,” said Sathesh Ramiah, Vice President of Defense, Asia Pacific, Honeywell Aerospace Technologies. “Whether powering advanced trainers or enabling new-generation combat platforms, our technologies are trusted to deliver safety, readiness, and performance for the missions that matter most.”

The engine features advanced Full Authority Digital Electronic Control and an integrated Engine Monitoring System, with a design that eliminates the need for complex afterburning systems. This contributes to lower fuel consumption, extended engine life, and high performance across diverse operating conditions.

With more than one million flight hours logged, the F124’s reliability has been thoroughly demonstrated in service. Its operational track record and integration flexibility make it a strong candidate for Japan’s evolving defence requirements.
