Defence Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky described the event as a significant milestone in strengthening Hungary’s helicopter capabilities. He stated that the exercise enhances the ability to support land forces and special operations while aligning with NATO procedures.
The HDF 86th Helicopter Wing regularly organises capability sustainment aerial gunnery exercises to ensure combat readiness. These training sessions are essential for refining aircrew skills, improving air-to-ground communication, and maintaining effective close air support tactics.
In addition to the H225M, H145M light multi-purpose helicopters and Mi-24 attack helicopters participated in the exercise, which runs from 17 to 28 February. The H225M, equipped with the HForce weapon package, carried out live air-to-ground firing using a 20mm autocannon and a MAG58 onboard machine gun.
During nighttime operations, the crew used night vision goggles (NVG) for target reconnaissance and acquisition. These advanced capabilities enhance precision and situational awareness in combat scenarios.
Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky emphasised that continuous military equipment modernisation and high-level soldier training are key priorities for the HDF. He reiterated that regular live firing exercises ensure Hungary’s air force remains prepared to defend the nation and fulfil NATO obligations in any situation.
