ICEYE and Safran forge strategic partnership to enhance geospatial intelligence

By Defence Industry Europe

Space technology company ICEYE and aerospace giant Safran have announced a long-term strategic partnership to develop cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for geospatial intelligence (GEOINT). The collaboration aims to strengthen strategic autonomy for governments by combining the expertise of both companies in AI and satellite imagery.

The partnership will leverage Safran.AI’s globally recognized capabilities in vision AI with ICEYE’s operation of the world’s largest commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) constellation. This collaboration is expected to enable faster and more accurate decision-making for government agencies involved in defence and intelligence.

SAR satellite imagery is particularly valuable as it can detect and classify objects of interest at any time of day and in all weather conditions. ICEYE’s SAR constellation, equipped with advanced sensors delivering 25 cm resolution, high image quality, and rapid image delivery within a few hours, makes it a key resource for military monitoring and strategic analysis.

Rafal Modrzewski, CEO and Co-Founder of ICEYE, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration. He said, “This partnership with Safran.AI allows us to maximize the value of our SAR data by integrating cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies. By adding ICEYE SAR imagery to Safran’s analytic capabilities we bring together the industry’s best imagery with the industry’s best multi-sensor image exploitation capability.”

Jean-Yves Courtois, CEO of Safran.AI, highlighted the significance of the partnership. He stated, “This partnership represents a major breakthrough for our customers and the geospatial intelligence community. By closely collaborating with ICEYE, we will achieve automatic SAR image analysis performance comparable to those of our electro-optical image detectors.”

The integration of multi-modal AI will enhance persistent monitoring capabilities, enabling governments to make more informed decisions based on a blend of SAR and electro-optical imagery. The announcement also builds on the existing partnership, with Safran already providing ICEYE with space-to-ground link solutions for rapid image transmission.
