IDV delivers first batch of MUV vehicles to Austrian Armed Forces

By Defence Industry Europe

Austrian Armed Force (Bundesheer) receivedthe first batch of Military Utility Vehicles (MUVs) from Iveco Defense Vehicles (IDV). These vehicles, based on the militarized version of the Iveco Daily 70.20, mark the beginning of Austria's initiative to replace its aging fleet of Pinzgauer trucks, which have been in service since the 1970s.

Iveco Defense Vehicles (IDV) is the supplier of these new MUVs, which are being integrated with specialized equipment by the Austrian company EMPL. To date, Austria has ordered 125 of these vehicles in two phases, in 2020 and 2023, totaling an investment of 42.5 million EUR. The complete delivery is expected by 2026.

Iveco describes the MUV as a robust and highly mobile military vehicle, adept at performing a wide range of operational tasks in various terrains and climates. The utilization of Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components like transmission, engine, and cabin not only ensures optimal performance, reliability, and ergonomics but also reduces logistical complexities.

These MUVs are also integral to the overhaul of Austria’s Tactical Communication Network (TCN), which facilitates real-time transmission of information and commands through a digital network. The vehicles are outfitted with advanced radio and communication technology, including tactical routers, servers, switches, and 6kVA power generators, allowing for efficient off-road communication.

Additionally, in late 2023, the Austrian Armed Forces placed an order in Germany for up to 300 HX family logistics vehicles from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV). This contract, to be fulfilled over 48 months, could increase in value to over 300 million EUR.
